Can a Chiropractor Help with Sinus Issues?

Sinuses are the hollow cavities in the skull lined with soft tissue called the mucosa. They have a thin layer of mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. This mucus then shields the nose from dust, dirt, microbes, and other pollutants. Healthy sinuses humidify and filter the air we breathe in which ensures that the kidneys, lungs, and blood stay safe from toxin invasion. The presence of toxins in these two organs can lead to infections, such as a sinus infection. These are the functions sinuses perform under normal conditions.

To understand the position, these are the four parts of the sinuses:

  • Maxillary sinuses which are the largest and holds the cheekbones together
  • Frontal sinuses in the low center of our forehead
  • Sphenoid sinuses in bones behind our nose
  • Ethmoid sinuses in between our eyes

Issues arise when these cavities become inflamed. The causes may vary. Some people may face sinus issues due to allergies, some may have it due to bacterial, or viral infections. These infections cause your sinuses to swell especially in the nasal passage areas and in the eye areas. The tissue becomes full of mucus and drainage is blocked which causes aching, swelling and manifests in pain on your forehead, or in the area between the eyes.

We often try to alleviate the symptoms with nasal sprays and medications. But there are alternative, natural methods to help relieve these issues as well, one being chiropractic. Even though chiropractors are widely known to adjust the back and neck, they can also adjust the sinus to relieve pain. For instance, if your neck’s vertebra goes out of alignment, your Chiropractor may improve your sinus’ drainage by adjusting your facial bones. By targeting areas around the neck and brain stem, they are able to encourage the body to relax and drain the sinus passages. Once this excess fluid drains from the sinus cavity, pressure is released and one can breathe comfortably. Manual or massage therapies can also be of great benefit. The gentle pressure and warmth from the hands may help by increasing blood circulation to the area, which reduces facial congestion and headaches.

In many cases, chiropractors can offer you preventive care with chronic sinusitis. Functioning of our body is regulated by the nervous system. They can help you prevent the build up of the mucus blockage by improving signals from the nervous system to the respiratory system. This is a safe drug-free treatment that will help you find the true relief.
