Chiropractic Care May Be Able To Treat Autism Symptoms

The lack of effective pharmaceutical treatments for autism has people searching for other types of treatments. Complementary treatments such as chiropractic care are commonly used today.
Autism is a disorder that affects an estimated 1 in 59 children. This condition affects social skills, causes repetitive behaviors and impedes speech and nonverbal communication. There is not one type of autism and it instead affects each person in different ways. People with autism can have unique strengths and challenges.
The other symptoms that can accompany autism are:
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Sleep problems
- Sensory issues
- Seizures
A systematic review was conducted on the effectiveness of chiropractic care on patients with autism and assessed the following core symptoms:
- impaired social interactions
- impairment of verbal and non-verbal relationships
- restricted behavioral patterns
The results showed that chiropractic care may be effective in reducing core symptoms of autism, but suggested more definitive studies.
The fact that there is no viable pharmaceutical treatment for autism makes chiropractic care one that should definitely be considered.
